How to increase your LinkedIn Engagement and Following

LinkedIn is the currently the 15th top visited website in the world. It currently has 100 million people visiting it each month, plus every second two more people sign up.

While LinkedIn is a social network used to meet new business professionals, it is unlike any other social media platforms. You have to think more strategically as to what you want to share on LinkedIn to stand out amongst the 30 million pages of well-qualified and active people.

LinkedIn users generally visit the platform:

  • To find relevant content that aids in their professional development.
  • To network with other professionals, whether it’s job seeking, searching for new employees or even just discussing your latest business accomplishment.
  • To create, curate and share content with the intent of making ourselves more visible to prospective employers, business partners, etc.

Why should you be using LinkedIn?

  • More than 50% of all social traffic to B2B sites comes from LinkedIn.
  • An astonishing 4 out of every 5 people on LinkedIn directly drive business decisions. The platform is teeming with professionals who have the power to authorise spending on your products and services.
  • It can build your brand. Sharing and posting your own LinkedIn content to your personal profile can show your followers your interests, career aspirations and potential for future endeavours.

How can you make the most of your LinkedIn?

We all know that to reach the highest engagement on LinkedIn posting consistency is key. However it can often be difficult to come up with new ideas for posts that are unique, stand out and most importantly link to your personal brand. Below are some ideas/ tips that are proven to help boost your LinkedIn profile and engagement.

1) Make the most of video

Surprisingly enough, video is just as valuable in the professional world as it is everywhere else.

On average people spend almost 3x more time watching video ads compared to time spent with static “Sponsored Content.” In fact, 59% of executives say that if text and video are available on the same topic, they’re more likely to choose video!

If you're not confident in your video editing skills check out YouTube, see what is being talked about most, find videos that link to your brand and industry. Add your opinions and views while sharing the video link, use this as an opportunity to express your ideas and opinions on the current market.

Regardless of where your videos are coming from, LinkedIn videos should be informative about your products, business and brand.

2) Statistics

By including statistics in your LinkedIn posts, you appear knowledgeable and well informed in your industry.

Think about sharing statistical content like:

  • Branded Infographics
  • Articles
  • Case Studies
  • White Papers
  • Videos

A great way to find recent statistics is to research articles on your business area. Some great tech articles can be found on www.cnbc.com, The Guardian, The Telegraph and Bloomberg.

Did you know that 60% of LinkedIn users report being interested in industry insights? So, if you’re already finding great content to share that really resonates with your industry, give it your own review as you post it!

3) Headlines

BuzzSumo analyzed 10,000 of the most shared posts published on LinkedIn and found a few interesting insights:

  • Use the word “habits.” Headlines with this word received an average of 1,196 shares.
  • The word “mistakes” drives shares. Content using this word in the headline generated an average of 556 shares.
  • Integrate the word “successful.” The word “successful” on average resulted in 416 shares.
  • Use “leader” or “leaders” in your headline. Content that uses this word resulted in an average of 483 shares.
  • The most-shared phrases are: How to… The future of… You need to… Why you should… Can learn from…

4) Call to action

One of the post important things to consider when creating a new post is what is your goal? Creating an effective CTA starts with identifying your goal. After reading your content, what do you want readers to do next? Maybe your goal is to get them to engage with more of your content, so you might want to include links to related content on your blog, where you can continue building that relationship.

5) Be consistent

Creating a content schedule can really help you to build up an audience. If you post on the same day at the same time each week, it makes it easier for your audience to get into the habit of tuning in. That trust can possibly translate into conversations and sales!

Recently both LinkedIn and Instagram have introduced a scheduling function into the platform whereby you can choose the date and time your would like your post to be published. This means you can plan your content in advance and maintain your consistency even if you aren't working during that time.

6) "How to" and Tips

People, especially professional and entrepreneur types, are hungry for knowledge that can help them and the beautiful thing about the world is there is always something to learn from someone else. So, do not be afraid to shine and share things you know!

7) List job postings

Who doesn’t love job postings? Since LinkedIn is seen as a place to network and job hunt, it’s always appropriate to post job listings!

By sharing open positions at your business, it allows people to connect with you and therefore start developing relationships with people you might have never before. Another perk to this content piece is when you post openings, it reflects growth!
